Right in the middle before you even leave

The Vienna Evening: every place on this page as a family quiz for the dinner table, with voice and aha facts.

Best time to visit for families

Advent from mid-November is the most beautiful and busiest time. Markets close on Christmas Eve or shortly after; in January the ice rink opens in front of City Hall. Spring and autumn are cheaper and emptier, in summer there are bathing beaches on the Old Danube.

Getting there
By train from Munich in four hours, from Hamburg overnight on the Nightjet. From the airport the S-Bahn reaches the city in twenty minutes.
Getting around
Metro and trams go everywhere; children under six ride free. The centre is walkable, pushchairs are fine in all metro stations with lifts.
Cold
December often hovers around freezing. For market visits bring hats, gloves and warm shoes, and warm up in a coffee house in between.

Good questions

Which Christmas market is best for kids?

Rathausplatz, for the children's world with crafts and baking, the ice rink and the carousel. Schönbrunn is the calmer choice with the zoo next door.

What do you do in Vienna when it rains or freezes?

Haus des Meeres, the Natural History Museum with dinosaurs, the Technical Museum, Zoom Children's Museum. And any coffee house.

How many days do you need?

Three days are enough for markets, zoo, Ferris wheel and one museum without overwhelming the kids.

Is Vienna expensive?

Markets, parks and many churches are free, museums have family tickets. Food at the markets adds up; a restaurant away from the centre is cheaper.

Is the Vienna City Card worth it?

Only if you use public transport a lot and visit several museums. For a weekend of markets and zoo, usually not.
